At the end of September, 1999, the new Parish of Traprain was formed by the union of the previously linked Parishes of Prestonkirk, Stenton and Whittingehame. The name, Traprain, was chosen because of the imposing presence of Traprain Law, visible from throughout the parish and with many historical and Christian associations.

| The new parish forms a sizeable part of East Lothian, on the east coast of Scotland, and lies near the eastern end of the county. The population of around 2500 is concentrated towards the north of the parish, mainly in the town of East Linton, the village of Stenton, and the community of Whittingehame. To the south, the parish extends into the Lammermuir Hills to its southern boundary with Scottish Borders. |
