Worn Stones

Suggestions to help in reading difficult stones

Try to read the inscription when the sun is directed across the surface at a shallow angle, perhaps an hour or so before midday for an inscription on the east face of a stone.

Sometimes a mirror can be used to direct light at a suitable angle onto the inscription.

A fine mist of water from a garden sprayer can highlight the edges of the letters and again works best when the light is at a certain angle, found by trial and error.

Running the fingers over the inscription with eyes closed works for some people in revealing worn inscriptions.
