Sometimes a mirror can be used to direct light at a suitable angle onto the inscription. A fine mist of water from a garden sprayer can highlight the edges of the letters and again works best when the light is at a certain angle, found by trial and error. Running the fingers over the inscription with eyes closed works for some people in revealing worn inscriptions.
