This inscription was recorded in an earlier survey completed
in 1971 by Miss Jenny Brown and Miss Margaret Warren.

Erected to the memory of William Mercer who died at Yarrow 11th April 1843 aged 47 years. Also Helen Spence his spouse who died at Overfield 27th April 1891 aged 86 years.

Helen's son was steward at Whittingehame Home Farm. Overfield was her daughter's residence.
