James Brown, born 1867 in Haddington, held a central place in the Parish for a long time as the very successful Headmaster of the School. He was also the Session Clerk. He was the son of William Brown, Cloth Merchant, and Alison Coltman. Margaret Philip was the daughter of Alexander Philip, Inspector of Poor, and Sarah Clark. Frank Alexander Brown was a Planter and Company Manager, married to Claire Crole.
