Peter Bell, who died on 26 October 1855 at Pitcox, was born at Biel Mill. He was a member of a long line of Blacksmiths mostly based at the Smiddy at Pitcox. Peter's father, also Peter Bell, died in 1834. He married Helen Bell, who died 1815. In 1789 he paid a rent of £1.3s 4d for his house and smiddy at Pitcox. Isabella Gray was the daughter of John Gray, Limeburner, and Marion Sanderson. The eight sons mentioned were Peter, John, Alexander, James, Robert, Thomas, Andrew and George. Two other sons died young. Thomas Bell died aged 41 years. James Bell, the son of Peter Bell and Isabella Gray, was also a Blacksmith at Pitcox and Spott. Agnes Hamilton was the daughter of Robert Hamilton, a Farm Steward, and Helen Dempster[See No 130].
