James Fraser was a schoolmaster at Stenton School from 1838 to 1891, when he retired. He had a well-known reputation as a teacher and the school went from strength to strength during his tenure, many pupils coming to study from outwith the parish. He played an active part in village life such as being an Elder of the Kirk and having been on the Founding Committee of Stenton Bowling Club.
