THE SAID PATRICK SHIRREFF,
DIED AT HADDINGTON 16TH DECEMBER 1876, AGED 85.
HE INTRODUCED THE HOPETOUN WHEAT AND OATS,
AND BY HIS LIFELONG LABOURS IN SELECTING
AND CROSSING VARIETIES OF WHEAT, SHEWED
HOW THE FOOD CROPS OF THE WORLD MIGHT BE
IMPROVED AND INCREASED.
Patrick Shirreff, the 3rd son of John Shirreff and Jessie Mylne was born in 1791 at Mungoswells. He was a pioneer of cereal seed-breeding; his principal researches being carried out in Haddington. In recognition of his pioneering labours he was entertained to a public dinner at Haddington in November 1869. He was a keen greyhound courser and excellent fisherman. His famous dog "Simon" won the Aberdeenshire Gold Cup in 1834. He was unmarried and died on 16th December 1876, aged 85.
