George Smellie was Chief Magistrate and then Provost in East Linton 1890 - 1893. He had the family grocery business at 16, Bridge Street and also served as the local postmaster for 30 years, during which time he never slept out of his house for a single night. He was president of East Linton Bowling Club 1875 - 1879. The grocery business was taken over by William Barrie in 1891. (See no. D148).
